Named for the trader and aristocracy Madam Efunroye Tinubu, Tinubu Square (previously Independence Square) is a notable open space on Broad Street in Lagos Island. Following Nigeria’s independence, the authorities of the First Nigerian Republic renamed it Independence Square, which was later changed to Tinubu Square, from Ita Tinubu.
History claims that it was the site of the first court of justice, which was superseded by the Supreme Court or the Court of Assizes, a magnificent building, in 1918.
The Square served as a cultural melting pot where native Lagosians, people from Brazil, and the colonial government all interacted.
