Video depicts General Yakubu Gowon, the head of state of Nigeria, inaugurating the country’s second multimillion-pound motor plant on the outskirts of Lagos. Volkswagen vehicles were assembled at the plant, which was a joint venture between the Federal government, the Lagos State government, and West German interests. The plant was initially projected to produce 60 vehicles per day at a cost of 11.5 million naira (7.4 million pounds sterling).
General Gowon stated the car project was a “manifestation of the good relations and understanding between the two countries” and commended West Germany’s prior financial assistance to Nigeria during the ceremony. In order to fully realize the potential of the local market, he urged Nigerians to take pride in Nigerian-made goods.
It was the second of these plants to be opened; the first was held the week before in the city of Kaduna during a ceremony officiated by Gowon.
